heres some half time stats as the third quarter gets under way.
Corey Leonard was 9-10 for 229 yards and 4 TDs.
Arnold has 123 yards rushing on 8 carries with 2 TDs.
Derek Lawson has 42 yards on 7 carries.
Texas Southern
C, Harmon is 5-12 for 63 yards.
W, WOODS had 26 yards on six carries.
Leonard should be done for the game as Hewitt starts the 2nd half.
Pretty decent game for Leonard. Ha ha.
ASU has turned the ball over due to a fumble by receiver Jahbari McLennan. (Probably the only bad thing ASU has done all game.)
The Indians continue to move the ball down the field in the 3rd quarter due to the efforts of Derek Lawson. More on that later.

ASU 52, TSU 0, 2nd
So I take back that previous commented about TSU being able to stop the run. Reggie Arnold must have been reading my submissions because he just ran all over the Tigers until he found himself in the end zone to make the score 45-0. Arnold ran it in from 2 yards out after a 5 play 78 yard drive which consisted mostly of Arnold rushes.
This is the 10th time that ASU has thrown 4 or more TDs in one game at ASU stadium.
ASU scored earlier in the 2nd quarter when Leonard hooked up with Jonathan White for a 25 yard pass. That particular drive consisted of one play. This is kinda of ridiculous.
Arnold just scored on a 56 yard run. It is the longest rush of Arnold's college career. His former high was 44 yard run against Tennessee last year. It is now 52 - 0. Arnold now has 123 yards on eight carries. This is his eleventh career 100 yard rushing game. It moves him into fifth place for all time in the ASU record place.
So does any body want to play some cards?

ASU 31 - TSU 0; End of 1st MASCOT REVEALED!
BEN OWENS! He is a beast. He picked off TSU quarterback Reid's pass and returned it to the 10 yd line.
Owens had seven tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, an interception and a fumble recovery in the game against Texas A&M. Owens was responsible for stopping the Aggies last two drives of the game after the Red Wolves went ahead 15-14. He recovered a fumble on the A&M 39-yard line and intercepted Stephen McGee with 10 seconds left in the game.
I smell a feature...
HOWL is introduced as the first quarter comes to a close. Sporting a T-shirt jersey with HOWL written across the back. I must say he looks a lot better looking then Red. He also seems a lot more excited to be there. Just saying. Pick up the Herald on Monday to see pictures of HOWL. The new Red Wolves mascot.
Oh and ASU scored one more time when Leonard hit fullback Jeff Blake for a 3 yard pass with 5:36 left in the first quarter.
Some stats for the 1st quarter:
Leonard was 7 for 8 with 190 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran for 21 yards on one carry.
Reggie Arnold had 10 yards on four carries. (About the only thing TSU is doing right is stopping the run.)

ASU 24 - TSU 0; 1st Quarter
It has been all ASU since Kevin Jones returned it for 39 yards on the opening kick off.
On ASU first possession, Corey Leonard completed a 53 yard pass to tight end David Johnson to take a 7-0 lead.
After TSU went three and out on its first possession, ASU scored after two plays when Leonard hooked up with tight end Trevor Gillot with 11:40 left in the first quarter. (14-0)
On the Tigers' next possession running back Marcus Wright coughed up the ball after a tremendous hit by a Red Wolf defensive player. Linebacker Javon Mckinnon picked up the ball and scored with 10:40 left in the first quarter.
At the 7:14 minute mark, Josh Arauco kicks a 33 yard field goal to make the score 24-0. Still in the first quarter.
And now back up quarterback Travis Hewitt is warming up on the side line.....

College Football Saturday
Coming to you live from ASU Stadium (formerly Indian Stadium), we are awaiting the start of the first home football game of the season. The Arkansas State Red Wolves are set to take on the Tigers of Texas Southern.
Notes about the game: (Courtesy of ASU Sports Info)
The Arkansas State football team will look for its first 2-0 start since 1986. Arkansas State defeated Texas A&M 18-14 in its season opener. With a victory, ASU can secure its first 2-0 start as a member of the NCCA FBS. The Texas Southern Tigers suffered a 34-14 setback in their season opener against Prairie View A&M.
Today's game is the first meeting between the two schools.
Arkansas State is 5-1 in home openers at ASU Stadium under head coach Steve Roberts, who has led the Red Wolves to a 22-7 record on their home field. ASU has won its last three home openers, including a 45-28 victory over SMU last season.
And so it begins...

Maybe changing the mascot was a good thing...

Before we changed from the ASU Indians to the ASU Red Wolves I was unsure how the city of Jonesboro or the athletic teams would respond during the 2008 - 2009 season. But so far the team and the city has responded well.
I almost don't want to write this blog because Im worried about cursing our team now but I feel that it must be pointed out. Since becoming the Red Wolves, our athletic teams have yet to lose a game. Period. In football, soccer, and volleyball.
Soccer is 2-0. They have defeated UCA and UAPB. The Lady Red Wolves have scored 12 goals in two games. They now have to face Centenary and Stephen F. Austin, which will prove to be a challenge because both teams have done well in the past. Stephen F. Austin made it to the NCAA tournament last year and have a lot of starters returning. Sophia Turesson and Kailey Gear both have scored three goals this season. Gear scored three against UCA and Turesson made her three against UAPB on Saturday. However, this weekend may prove too much for the Red Wolves and they soccer program may be the first team to pick up a loss as the Red Wolves.
Volleyball is 4-0. They recently defeated Tennessee-Martin 3-0 at home on Tuesday. They also defeated Texas Southern, Mississippi Valley State, and The Citadel during a tournament in Houston. They Lady Red Wolves have yet to even lose a match, defeating all opponents by a score of 3-0. ASU is off to its best start since 2004 season when it started the year 5-0. Junior outside hitter Konae Purcell led ASU with 14 kills during the game against The Citadel.AND MOST IMPORTANTLY. Football is 1-0. Coming off a huge win against Texas A&M on Saturday by a score of 18-14. This is the first time that ASU has beaten an BCS team since moving to Division 1-A football. This is the first time in 15 tries that ASU has won an away opener. After falling just short against Texas last season, the Red Wolves proved to be the team that wanted it more on Saturday.
"They outplayed us, outcoached us and beat us as a team," Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman said about the Red Wolves to Texas A&M's the Battalion (their college newspaper.)
Next the Red Wolves will play the Tigers of Texas Southern on Saturday at what used to be Indian Stadium beginning at 6 p.m.

Pinch me I must be dreaming...
Before the game on Saturday, Corey Leonard told the Herald, "Come Saturday it's just us versus them and we'll see who wants it more." Well I guess ARKANSAS STATE wanted it more as they pulled the upset against Texas A&M on Saturday by a score of 18-14.
Leonard threw to Kevin Jones for a 15 yard touchdown to make the score 15-14 with 7:10 left in the 4th quarter. A 37-yard field goal by Josh Arauco and an interception by Ben Owens sealed the upset over the Aggies.
Leonard finished the night 15-28 for 161 and a TD through the air and 86 yards on 18 carries as ASU picked up its first win as the newly appointed Red Wolves.

Reggie Arnold came through in a big way for the Red Wolves with a 145 yards on 21 carries. After giving up two rushing touchdowns in the first half, the defense of Arkansas State stepped up mentally and physically to slow down the rushing attack of Goodson who finished the night with a 122 yards and 2 TDs.
But the player of the game, besides Corey Leonard, goes to Arauco who made four field goals on the night. (37, 28, 25, 37) Last season, Arauco was 4 of 7 from 30-39 yards out with an overall percentage of 65.2 on the year. He has definitely showed a vast improvement over the off season.
Do not call this a fluke. Do not call this a miracle. Arkansas State simply outplayed the Aggies. They had 421 yards compared to A&Ms 301. Aggie quarterback McGee threw two interceptions. Leonard threw NONE. In fact, ASU turned it over only one time on a Leonard fumble. ASU scored 15 unanswered points in the second half to come back from a 14-3 deficit. I don't know what Coach Roberts said in the locker room at half time but it must have had the quality of a "Friday Night Lights" or even a "Waterboy." OK so it probably was little better than "Remember that one time when Bobby Boucher showed up at half time and the Mud Dogs won!" but whatever it was it surely sparked the ASU defense to finish one of the biggest upsets in school history!
Arkansas State definitely did better than other Sun Belt School on opening weekend. LA Lafayette, FAU, FIU, LA Monroe, and North Texas were all blown out by their opponents.
This is the first time that ASU has beaten A&M (1-3) and it could not have come a better time. Maybe the change from Indian to Red Wolves sparked the motivation to make this inaugural season one to remember. Time will only tell. Next week we have Texas Southern so be sure to make the five minute walk to watch your Red Wolves take the field for the first time in the 2008 season.
